intro

In a world that never stops moving, the field of counselling is breaking free from its conventional boundaries, ushering in a thrilling new era – mobile counselling. Envision this scenario: I set off on an initial 3 month journey in my camper, embarking on a journey that brings self-discovery while offering support to both clients and fellow counsellors, as I dive into the adventurous and therapeutic pursuit of taking my counselling practice on the road.

Let’s specifically delve into the unique setting of a camper journeying through the awe-inspiring landscapes of Australia, with my adventure scheduled to commence this May.

embracing the mobile lifestyle

As I move closer to shifting my counselling practice to a nomadic lifestyle I pause to reflect on what many have suggested is a courageous and unconventional decision.

What about you?

Have you thought about doing the same? Have you pictured yourself, driving across Australia’s open roads, embracing the liberating nature of the mobile lifestyle?

A journey like this allows for connection with nature and the many diverse communities which are scattered across the vast expanse of Australia. When you stop to think about the way in which you would need to be adapting to an ever-changing environment, it is easy to see how this lifestyle could become a metaphor for the therapeutic journey itself – evolving, fluid, and rich with surprises.

creating a mobile office

Leveraging the power of technology, creating a mobile counselling office is now more accessible than ever. For face-to-face sessions, the transformation of your camper into a serene and conducive space for counselling requires time and planning. It’s all about the space and the level of privacy you can achieve. On the flip side, by integrating reliable digital platforms for virtual sessions, you will be able to maintain a seamless connection with clients, irrespective of your physical location.

Planning is key. When you put in the work, backed by the vision and belief of what you want to achieve, you will not only benefits clients but, as you have dreamed about for so long, you are now also positioned to deliver therapeutic services from the heart of Australia’s natural wonders.

building connections across borders

Travelling Australia, corner to corner, opens the door to building connections with clients and rural counsellors in diverse communities. As you wind your way through landscapes, you’ll encounter individuals with unique stories and challenges, each representing a distinct cultural background.

I love the thought of this nomadic counselling practice becoming a bridge, connecting people across geographical and cultural borders, fostering a sense of unity and shared human experience.

In my journey I am keen for the opportunity to bridge the geographical and professional gaps that I have been told can leave rural counsellors feeling isolated. If I am able to connect and meet face-to-face with these dedicated individuals, I aim to offer not only professional collaboration but also a sense of camaraderie and shared experience. My hope is that together, we can exchange insights, strategies, and invaluable emotional support, fostering a community that transcends physical distances.

anticipating challenges and rewards

While the nomadic counselling journey promises numerous rewards, it’s not without its challenges. Adapting to unpredictable weather, navigating remote areas with limited connectivity, and managing the logistical intricacies of a mobile practice demand resilience and flexibility. However, the personal and professional growth stemming from overcoming these challenges is immeasurable, making the endeavor so very deeply rewarding.

conclusion

When I think of myself embarking on a journey through Australia in a camper with my counselling practice in tow, I know it is not a career move; it’s a lifestyle that brings together relationship, adventure, connection, and self-discovery. Of all these things, relationship excites me the most.

I am also incredibly excited at the prospect of connecting with rural counsellors. My mobile counselling venture will take on an added layer of significance through what I hope to be connection with counsellors who often find themselves as the sole mental health professionals in their town. My hope is that a connection will be established during these encounters, allowing for the sharing of experience and mutual support .

moving forward – what now?

Moving forward, it is my aim that my nomadic counselling venture will not only benefit clients, but also become an opportunity to bridge geographical and professional gaps that can leave many counsellors feeling isolated. When I am able to meet with other Counsellors, in many different and varied locations, I offer, and gain not only professional collaboration but also a sense of camaraderie and shared experience.

As I plan to embark on this mobile counselling journey across Australia, I extend a warm invitation to rural counsellors, urging you to reach out for connection and collaboration. Whether you’re navigating the challenges of being the sole counsellor in town or simply seeking a colleague who is keen to understand more about the nuances of rural counselling, I invite you to connect with me during my travels.

Please feel free to reach out via email, leave a message, or connect through social media.

Safe travels to us all on this collective journey toward strengthened mental health support in every corner of Australia.

Take care,

Sam
